Playing in and around the water can be a lot of fun, but it is also important to be aware of the dangers.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is the leading cause of death for kids ages 1-4. For children ages 5-14, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death after motor vehicle crashes. Drowning is preventable, and it is important for kids and parents to agree on some rules for times when they are around open water.

The following suggestions can be used to start a conversation about water safety with your family, but you should also consult experts such as the CDC, the American Red Cross, and the YMCA for more advice!
