The Snail and the Whale Read-Along

Rhyme Time

The Snail and the Whale tells a story using rhymes, or words that make the same kind of sound. Can you tell a story using rhyming words? Here are some ideas to get you thinking:

  • This is the story of a girl named Sam.
  • This is the story of a dog named Jones.
  • This is the story of a great big cat.
  • This is the story of a boy who sings.

Can you tell a story about yourself using rhyming words?

Opposites Attract

The two friends in The Snail and the Whale are opposites. Even though the tiny snail and a great big humpback whale are opposite in size, they work together as a team as they go on adventures and see lots of different places.

You may already know that two magnets stick together when the opposite ends (called poles) face one another. But did you know that batteries also use opposites to work? Batteries have two ends called terminals, which can be positive or negative. The positive terminal is marked with a plus sign (+), and the negative terminal is marked with a minus sign (-). A battery works when electricity flows from a positive terminal to a negative terminal to power things like remote controls, radios, and toys. Both magnets and batteries use the power of opposites to work, just like the power between the snail and the whale!
